Health insurance premiums in Switzerland 2027: what’s changing and what you can do

by James Austin

Premiums for mandatory health insurance (Grundversicherung) will rise again in 2027. Your new premium letter should already have arrived. For most households, the next few weeks are the only chance to act before the higher premium is locked in for the year.

The figures at a glance

  • National average: The average premium will be CHF 412 per month in 2027, an increase of 5.0%, or CHF 19.70, over 2026.
  • Adults (26+): up CHF 22.80 (4.9%) to CHF 487.60 per month.
  • Young adults (19–25): up CHF 15.40 (4.8%) to CHF 338.80.
  • Children (to 18): up CHF 5.70 (4.6%) to CHF 128.10.
  • Cantonal range: from +3.0% in Glarus (smallest increase) to +6.6% in Jura (largest).
  • Deadline to switch: 30 November 2026.

Your cancellation must arrive at your insurer by this date.

What the figures mean

The average premium is calculated by adding up all premiums paid in Switzerland and dividing by the total number of insured people. What you actually pay depends on where you live, your age, your deductible, your insurer and your insurance model.  Your own increase may therefore be well above or below 5%.

The cause is rising costs. The FOPH names more treatments, medical-technological progress and an ageing population as the main drivers.  It expects costs to grow by 4.7% in 2026 and 5.0% in 2027.

Practical steps

  1. Check your deductible (Franchise).
Adults can choose a deductible between CHF 300 and CHF 2,500. A higher deductible means a lower premium, but you must be able to pay that amount if you fall ill. After the deductible, you also pay 10% of further costs, capped at CHF 700 a year for adults and CHF 350 for children. A high deductible suits people with low, predictable medical costs. It does not suit people with ongoing treatment.

  2. Consider an alternative model.
You can save by giving up free choice of doctor.  The FOPH groups these models by your first point of contact: a designated practice, a telephone or digital service, a partner pharmacy, or a flexible choice among these.  Read the conditions carefully. Some models require you to use generic medicines, for example.

  3. Compare and switch insurer.
priminfo.ch is the federal government’s only official premium calculator. It is anonymous, independent and ad-free.  Insurers must accept everyone for basic insurance, regardless of age or health.

    To switch:
    - Send your cancellation by registered post or A-Post Plus by 15 November, so it arrives by 30 November.
    - Register with the new insurer at the same time.
    - Keep your postal receipt.
    - You cannot switch if you still owe your current insurer money on 31 December and received a reminder for it by 30 November.

  4. Don’t cancel supplementary insurance by accident.
Supplementary insurance works differently: the insurer can refuse you, or exclude certain benefits, after a health assessment.  Switch your basic insurance only, unless you have confirmed new supplementary cover first.

  5. Check your entitlement to premium subsidies (Prämienverbilligung).
Your canton of residence decides who qualifies and how much. Some cantons reduce premiums automatically; in others you must apply to the responsible cantonal authority.
